Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2003)

Since I have already written two negative reviews this week and don't feel like writing another, I will just say briefly that I was disappointed with George Clooney's directorial debut, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." The movie is based on the "unauthorized autobiography" of Chuck Barris, the 1970s TV producer who created and hosted "The Gong Show" and claims to have been a CIA assassin. I fidgeted through most of the film, not always understanding (or caring) what was going on, and having absolutely no interest whatsoever in Barris himself, wild and wacky though his life (or at least his version of it) may have been. The fault lies not so much with star Sam Rockwell, but with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (who did such a great job on "Adaptation") and with Clooney (who, like his working partner Steven Soderbergh, clearly favors style over substance).
